A Brief G’day from Sean…
Sean’s Approach to recording and mixing…
The first step is getting to know the artist.
I usually have a couple of consultations with the artists or band and do some free demos so we can get on the same page.
I want to hear all of the outcomes you have in mind, what you like and don’t like and listen to the demos to get a game plan.
Once we have a game plan we can book in the necessary time and get recording.
Your work is important to me and I will make sure that I do everything I can to achieve great results.
I love all genres and approaches to music production so I will tailor my mic set up and all other recording techniques to your style.
Once we’re in the studio it's all about having a really good time that aids your creativity and productivity.
Make yourself at home and get comfortable. Beers, some friends… whatever you need to get in your vibe.
I thrive in this environment and tuning drums, pulling bass and guitar tones and facilitating a bands recording is like a holiday for me. I love it.
And I want it to feel like a holiday for you too. Take time off work, forget about everything but your music and get swept away in the studio creating some amazing music and memories!
When we are done and it's time to mix I generally like to do the bulk of mixing alone. By now I should have a pretty good understanding of the direction you want me to take your music and will work really hard to come up with something that makes you go “wow! Holy shit that’s good!”.
If I have missed the mark thats fine. We can start again and I will keep working till we crush it.
When the mix is done its all your’s ready for mastering and an awesome release.

About the Recording Process
Novotone have designed our recording Studio to cater to all artists.
We have three main recording processes that you can choose from based on your genre and desired outcomes.
Live recording with all instruments in one big room
This production style would be suitable for any band looking for a very organic, raw and live sound. If you love imperfections and the sound of a band in one room jamming out then this might suit you.
Isolated live recording with all instruments in separate rooms.
Suited genres: Jazz, soul, funk, hardcore, old school punk.
Live recording with instruments isolated in separate rooms
If you’re looking to capture the live energy of your band but still want achieve clarity and separation in your mix then this will suit you. Drums, bass amps and guitar amps will be isolated in their own seperate room while the band can interact with each other through glass windows. The set up typically has the drummer in a live room and the rest of the band in a room together hearing their own mix through headphones.
Suited genres: All kinds of rock.
Multi-tracking process with separate tracking for each instrument
This process allows individual tracking of instruments and is suited to anyone looking for that “perfect” sound. The drummer will generally track first, followed by bass, then guitar and then vocals. If you are looking for a modern sound that is very tight and clear then this is the way to go.
For example, by tracking the drums first we can then edit them to a grid to get that super snappy “in-time” vibe that is common in a lot of modern music. We can also spend more time on pulling tones for individual instruments and makes sure that we perfect every take.
Suited genres: Rock, metal and pop.
